Fifty-two rooms

Four types, shaped by the walls

The warehouse was never laid out for sleeping, so no two rooms match. We sorted them into four types by where they sit in the building. Every room has blackout shutters inside the old frames, a kettle and a stovetop pot, a wool blanket folded at the foot of the bed and a radiator you're free to turn up.

Rooms are cleaned daily unless you hang the card, and housekeeping works between nine and three. You can't book on this site. Write or telephone and a person answers.

01 La Pointe · corner room

Type one

La Pointe

These are the corner rooms, where rue du Marché-Finlay meets the lane, with two outside walls, two windows, and light from the east in the morning and the south after lunch. They are the brightest rooms we have, and they take longest to warm up.

  • 22–26 m²
  • queen bed
  • first and second floor
  • two deep windows
  • walk-in shower
  • eight rooms

Three of the eight still have the original iron shutter hooks on the outside of the frame. The shutters no longer close, and we left the hooks because removing them would mean cutting the stone.

02 La Poutre · beam room

Type two

La Poutre

The room is named for the beam that crosses the ceiling about two metres above the floor. It is the longest single timber in the building and was never going to move, so the rooms on that run were built around it. Tall guests learn where it is quickly, and we mention it at booking and again at check-in.

  • 18–21 m²
  • double bed
  • second floor
  • exposed beam at 2.0 m
  • bath with shower
  • fourteen rooms

These are the quietest rooms on the street side, since the beam run sits behind the thickest part of the wall. They are also closest to the stone stair, so the walk up to the second-floor landing in the evening is short.

03 La Cour · courtyard side

Type three

La Cour

These rooms face inward over the courtyard, where snow banks against the north wall and stays until April. Street noise doesn't reach them. The light is flat and grey for much of the winter, though, and you will hear the kitchen door in the morning.

  • 19–23 m²
  • queen or twin
  • ground, first and second floor
  • courtyard view
  • walk-in shower
  • twenty rooms

Four of them, on the ground floor, open straight onto the courtyard through a half-glazed door. In July that's the best room in the building. In February we lock the door and put a draught roll against it.

04 Le Grenier · top floor

Type four

Le Grenier

These rooms are under the roof, where goods were once hauled up by block and tackle through a door that is now a window. The ceiling follows the slope, so the usable height runs from 1.6 metres at the eaves to about 3 at the ridge. The dormers look over slate and tin and, from two of the rooms, a slice of the river.

  • 17–20 m²
  • double bed
  • third floor, stairs only
  • sloped ceiling
  • shower room
  • ten rooms

The lift stops at the second floor, and from the landing it's thirty-one steps in two flights, with a turn. If that's a problem, say so when you write and we'll put you lower in the building.

Worth knowing

Before you choose

The lift serves the ground and first floor rooms. The stone stair beside reception runs the full height of the building and is quicker for anyone who doesn't mind steps.

Two ground-floor rooms are level with the street and have grab rails and a roll-in shower. Tell us when you write and we'll hold one.

Cots and extra beds can go into La Pointe and La Cour only. Dogs are welcome on the ground floor at no charge, as long as they stay off the second-floor landing in the evening.
