The house position
The second-floor room is a small part of a small hotel, and it is there because guests enjoy an evening at a table. We prefer a quiet room with eight comfortable people in it to a full one that includes somebody who should have gone to bed. Staff are instructed accordingly, and nobody here is paid on what the tables take.
Everything on this page is arranged face to face, in this building, by people on shift. There is no form to fill in and no number to ring; nobody outside the hotel is involved.
Strictly adults
The legal age in Québec is 18. Photo identification is checked at the door on every visit, hotel guests included, however often you have been before. Nobody under 18 comes up the stair while the floor is open, for any reason, even to look at the room. A guest who hands over a document that is not theirs is refused for the whole stay.
What staff can arrange, and will
Ask anyone on duty. These are ordinary requests, and nobody will make a face.
- A limit for the evening. Give the duty manager a figure and it is written down. The door and the tables are told, and it holds until the floor closes.
- A time limit. Say when you want to finish, and a member of staff will come and tell you when the hour arrives. Let them know beforehand whether a single reminder is enough or you want to be asked to leave.
- A break. Ask, and the bar will find you a seat away from the tables, with a glass of water and some quiet. Sitting there costs nothing, for as long as you like.
- A quiet period. Keep yourself off the floor for a week, a month, a season or a year. We record it at reception and at the door.
- Confidential self-exclusion. Come to the desk, in person, and say so. Staff take the details and you choose the length, and it begins immediately. It is kept at reception and at the door, and it is not discussed with anybody else, including people you are travelling with.
A record made this way is kept only so that it can be enforced. It is not shared outside the hotel or used for any other purpose. When it expires nothing restarts automatically, and you would have to come to the desk again.
No credit, no cash machine
The hotel gives no credit on the gaming floor, to anybody, including guests with a room account in good standing. Nothing from that floor goes on a room bill. There is no cash machine on the floor, in the lobby or anywhere else in the building, and we don't plan to install one. The nearest is a walk away in the cold, which is deliberate.
Signs worth noticing
None of these means much on its own. Several together, over a few evenings, are worth thinking about.
- Going back upstairs after deciding you were finished for the night.
- Playing on after the money you came out with has gone, to get it back.
- Being vague with the people you are travelling with about where you have been.
- Thinking about the tables at breakfast.
- Borrowing, from a person or a card, in order to keep going.
- Feeling relief when you win and anger when you lose.
- Letting a meal, a walk or a night's sleep go in order to be in the room.
How staff are trained
Everyone who works the door, the tables or the bar upstairs is trained before their first shift and again every year. The training covers the age and identification rule, how to turn somebody away without a scene, how to recognise the signs above, how to offer a break or a limit unprompted, and how to take a self-exclusion at the desk. Dealers are told directly that stopping a session is part of the job and will never be held against them.
The duty manager is on the floor every evening and makes the final decision on whether somebody has had enough for the night.
If it is somebody else
If you are worried about a person you are travelling with, speak to the duty manager at the desk. Staff cannot tell you what another adult has been doing. They can note your concern, keep an eye on the room and make sure the person is offered a break. If that person later asks to be kept off the floor, it is arranged there and then.
How to ask
Reception is staffed at every hour of the day and night, four metres from the bottom of the stair. Come down and say it in as few words as you like. If you would find it easier to write first, [email protected] reaches the same desk, though the arrangement itself is made in person when you arrive.
